You and your school can help shift the focus back onto books and the magic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itselementary.com\/special-events\/reading-events\">reading<\/a> with the help of these fifteen ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itselementary.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Readathon.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5979\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Readathon Fundraiser<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizing a readathon has <em>two<\/em> huge benefits. It gets your students excited about reading <em>and, <\/em>of course, raises money for your school. Work with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.read-a-thon.com\/\">readathon company<\/a> to help put it together or organize the event yourself. From donations, timing, and publicity, to choosing a theme and offering small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itselementary.com\/student-awards\">prizes<\/a>, this is a big, rewarding reading event for your elementary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Book Swap<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hold a book swap right before a winter or summer break&#8211;this ensures kids always have something to read! Have students bring 1-2 gently used books to swap for others. Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/professional-excellence\/student-engagement\/read-across-america\">NEA website<\/a> to find many different ways to celebrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Little Free Library<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up a <a href=\"https:\/\/littlefreelibrary.org\/start\/build-a-little-free-library\/\">little free library<\/a> is a fantastic way to encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itselementary.com\/special-events\/reading-events\">reading<\/a> in your community. It\u2019s a fun complement to traditional, larger community libraries and it encourages children to donate books and get involved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Short Plays Based on Favorite Books<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perform a series of short plays or skits that are based on students\u2019 favorite stories! This can be done as a special \u201cend of the week\u201d treat or coordinate your field trip with an author visit! You\u2019re never too old to listen to a good book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Get Parents Involved<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s weekly emails, monthly sit downs, or planning reading events with volunteers, get parents involved with your students\u2019 progress. Parental involvement and support in and out of the classroom typically has a positive effect on students; reading skills will blossom and confidence will increase!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Lead By Example<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We know it\u2019s easy to check your email or social media while students work. Make sure you always have a book on your desk.
